The Widmanstätten pattern is a distinctive interlocking crystal structure that appears in certain types of iron meteorites known as octahedrites. These patterns form deep within the cores of asteroids during the cooling of the asteroid's nickel-iron core over millions of years. The Widmanstätten patterns are visible when a meteorite slice is polished, etched with acid, and then examined under light.
